Functional Training

MERS specialise in functional training, a very effective and time efficient method of improving overall body function, health, well-being and quality of life. Functional training involves training your body for the activities performed in your daily life; working across the body’s planes (directions) of movement, and in line with the body’s natural movement patterns. It improves posture by strengthening the overall body including the back and core, builds endurance and gives flexibility and mobility to your joints. This further helps to diminish arthritis pain, back aches, neck pain, shoulder and knee problems, and increases injury prevention.

Rehabilitation

All MERS programs are tailored to your specific needs and the unique biomechanics of your body, including existing pain, injuries and/or postural limitations for rehabilitation. The MERS accredited rehabilitation trainer was taught by elite sports physiotherapists, osteopaths and occupational therapists to risk profile clients to address pain, instability and injuries. We work with clients to repair physical limitations and to rebuild and strengthen the body to reduce pain, and avoid further damage and injury. MERS recognise, understand, and deal with the pain and instability in your body to help you regain freedom of movement, postural strength and correctness, and gain results. MERS can help you repair the impact of injury on your overall health, well-being, and ultimately, increase your quality of life.

Body Composition

Simply losing a few kilograms for appearance (for gymnastics, or just plain confidence), improving power-to-weight ratio (for sprinting), meeting weigh-in requirements (for boxing) or decreasing body fat percentage (e.g. marathon or for general well-being and day to day endurance). MERS develop specialised whole body functional workouts, which use more muscle groups and burn more calories, but also build strength, increase muscle mass and help you bulk up or trim down. MERS are specialised in skin fold testing to determine body composition (muscle to fat ratio), to develop tailored client programs that achieve specific body composition goals, increasing lean muscle mass and decreasing body fat. MERS work with you to develop an exercise and nutrition program to successfully alter your body composition and to maintain those changes.

Sport Specific Training

MERS sports specific and high level performance training optimises your sporting ability and builds strength, power, speed, agility, endurance and recovery. Working from within the core, MERS targets specific sporting requirements within a whole body approach. The results include increased flexibility, ease of movement and body balance to amplify sporting capacity, injury prevention and recovery capability. Take your sporting capacity to the next level with a sports training analysis and programming for specific and holistic fitness development.

Nutrition

Food is crucial to your body’s ability to function at capacity, and to empower you to achieve overall health and well-being. MERS ensures food selection and preparation, and it’s ingestion, are in line with the attainment of your training goals. Whether for fat loss, strength building, body toning, or fueling the body for training and sporting performance, food selection is essential to ensure the body has the vitamins, minerals and chemicals it needs.

Functional Circuit Training (FCT)

(1.1) SNK_3328MERS FCT are high-intensity resistance circuits, integrating whole-body workouts that draw on the body’s natural movement patterns and work across the body’s planes of movement; [sagittal (front to back), frontal (side to side) and transverse (rotational)]. FCT is a combined strength and cardiovascular workout in a dynamic training environment and uses a diverse range of equipment. Specifically, FCT involves training the body for the activities performed in daily life.

FCT is a very effective and time efficient method of improving overall body function, health, well-being and quality of life. It improves posture by strengthening the overall body including the back and core, builds endurance and gives flexibility and mobility to your joints. This further helps to diminish arthritis pain, back aches, neck pain, shoulder and knee problems, and increases injury prevention. FCT uses more muscle groups, which burns calories and provides for excellent fat loss, body composition (muscle to fat ratio) and body tone. FCT also enhances sporting performance through increased energy levels, strength building and flexibility.

Core Focus

(2) SNK_3347The MERS Core Focus is more than just doing crunches, which only work the core in one plane of motion. At MERS we focus on flexion, rotation, lateral flexion and the posterior core to address all three planes of motion. The core is composed of multiple muscle groups including the deep abdominal and lower back muscles, diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, latissimus dorsi, hip flexors and the gluteal muscles. All these muscles work in concert to stabilise the spine while moving your limbs, and they all need strength training.

The body’s core is the link between the lower and upper body, and transfers forces between them. For optimal performance, the core needs to be solid to avoid energy leaks within the kinetic chain. A dysfunctional core that ineffectively transfers forces will put more strain on the limb muscles and tendons, resulting in overuse injuries. The core also functions to stabilise the body’s center during movements that require a high degree of balance or body control, as are performed in sport and everyday life.

While the contraction of the deep inner unit core muscles provides segmental stabilisation of the spine, the outer unit controls the range of motion, generates movement and provides gross stability. By strengthening the muscles that surround the torso, stability and balance of the spine, good and strong posture, and overall health and well-being is achieved. Core specific activation exercises are enhanced through the use of various equipment tools.

Boxing Circuit

(1) SNK_3338A MERS boxing class is an exciting, high intensity whole-body workout in the round. Clients transition between exercises without a break in between to provide cardiovascular conditioning. By alternating between cardiovascular and strength exercises, clients experience an interval training program that burns fat, increases body tone and strengthens the body in one class. Further, the motivating intensity of the class helps to increase overall athletic ability, developing speed, increasing agility and building stamina.

Naturally, all MERS circuit training compensates for each client’s unique biomechanics, and any existing injuries. So each of the boxing activities are varied according to the client’s personal health goals. Each working across the body’s planes (directions of movement), and drawing on the body’s natural movement patterns.

Circuit training is one of the most efficient exercise routines as it allows people to get in the greatest number of reps in the least amount of time. Circuit training is particularly useful for people of today, who are generally time poor.

Maximum Motion & Myofascial Release

(1) SNK_3496MERS Maximum Motion and Myofascial Release Class is a combination of soft tissue therapies, including myofascial release, foam rolling, PNF stretching and flexibility exercises.

Myofascial release is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and reduction in associated pain. The therapy relaxes contracted muscles, improves blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulates the stretch reflex in muscles.

PNF stretching, or (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching, is a set of stretching techniques used to enhance both active and passive range of motion with the ultimate goal of optimising motor performance and rehabilitation.

Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) technique that is used by athletes and physical therapists to reduce the tension of contracted or stretched muscles. Foam rolling improves soft tissue extensibility, relaxing the muscle and allowing the activation of associated muscles.

Benefits of MERS Muscle Release include release of muscle tension, improved recovery, improved flexibility and enhanced performance. This class is particularly useful in working to relieve pain and in rehabilitating overused and overstretched muscles, to restore balance in the body.

High Performance Training

(2) SNK_3332MERS High Performance Training is an intense, rewarding class combining plyometrics and bodyweight exercises for muscular and core strength building for improved force output and explosive power, and also increases aerobic and anaerobic capacity.

Bodyweight exercises use the client’s own weight to provide resistance for the required movement, and demands flexibility and balance to be able to perform repetitions. With the addition of speed or unstable surfaces (such as a stability ball) as well as exercise variations that limit the motion (such as extra wide push-ups or wide pull-ups), the bodyweight exercises work further to strengthen the core. MERS Bodyweight & Plyometrics class is tailored to the client, with the bodyweight exercises progressed or regressed as needed to meet the individual needs

Plyometrics requires muscles to exert maximum force in as short a time as possible, with the goal of increasing both speed and power. Plyometric training focuses on learning to move from a muscle extension to a contraction in a rapid way, as is used in specialised repeated jumping. Plyometrics includes squat jumps, lateral jumps, power skipping, tuck jumps, alternate leg bounding, box jumps, vertical depth jumps and plyometric push-ups.

The benefits of plyometrics include increases in muscular power, endurance and strength, better sporting performance, enhanced ability to burn calories, joint protection, and increases in speed and stamina. Plyometrics is particularly effective for athletes looking to increase sporting ability and performance.
